5 Ways to Blend Your Styles During a Renovation

It can feel like a tall task when you choose to remodel your home...especially if you and your partner can’t agree on a style. It is crucial that you and your partner feel happy and comfortable in your new space. It might feel impossible to blend your two unique styles, but these 5 tips can assure that your different styles seamlessly come together!

1. Choose a color scheme.

Sit down with your partner and select 5 colors that speak to both of you. Remember to compromise and choose 2 main colors and 3 secondary colors. A color scheme will keep the space feeling more cohesive even if the items have a different style. Color can provoke emotion and communicates the overall mood of the room you are remodeling! Make sure you are equally happy with the chosen colors!

Tip: Find a photograph, piece of art, scenic view, etc. that gives off the mood of the space you are trying to achieve. Is it a soothing and relaxing beach scene, an exciting and playful carnival, or an industrial and masculine warehouse? Whatever it may be, choose the two main colors that take up most of the space and 3 secondary colors noted throughout.

2. Create an item together.

If you don’t have that one Pinterest or DIY project that you have always wanted to create, then search online and find something that excites you both! This is the perfect opportunity to build something special together. Get creative and literally blend your styles into a signature piece! It is a great bonding experience and gives you the opportunity to create a special item in your home that you created together! Make this signature piece inspire the other items you chose to put in the space.

Tip: If you’re not the crafty type, get a piece custom made or simply paint a used piece of furniture to match your color scheme. Facebook marketplace, your local furniture thrift store, and Goodwill are all great places to find inexpensive items!

3. Pick one item to put in the space that is special to each of you.

Make sure this is an item that you LOVE and has meaning. Explain to your partner the significance of the piece and why you feel it belongs in the space. Make sure it sticks to the color scheme and if there is a way to compromise, do it! For example, put the picture you have to have in a frame your partner likes!

4. Be consistent!

Consistently bringing specific elements that you both like will create unity within the space! Use one of your primary colors and assure that it is seen throughout multiple items. Consistency and repetition can bring a connection between the styles and decor. That perfect shade of blue you both chose as a secondary color is great to use for pillow throws, a picture on the wall, in the curtains, and that accessory on the shelf!

5. Have fun, communicate, and be patient!

Your perfectly blended space won’t develop overnight. Carefully select items that stand out to you and be sure to communicate to each other why you like or dislike the item. This is your chance to reinvent the space so take your time and work together!

Tip: Have a picnic in your new space and make it special!

Overall, just make sure that you and your partner are having a good time! Bring a good aura into the space and remember to support each other. Remodeling your home is a great opportunity to learn more about your partner and what surroundings makes them happy. It will take time to develop the perfect space but it will feel so rewarding to enjoy the new renovations you created together!
